"Separation of Church and State in the United States: What Does it Mean?"

The United States is known around the world for its "separationist" approach to church-state relations. As a result of both the First Amendment to the United States Constitution and the nation's political culture, government and religion in the U.S. remain significantly independent from each other.

On the other hand, religion has always played an important and influential role in U.S. politics and policy. It continues to do so today, perhaps even more so than ever. How can this be so in a country committed to separationism?

In this talk, I will discuss what the concept of separation of church and state means (and doesn't mean) in the United States, with reference to the historical development of the term, the First Amendment's Establishment Clause, and current events, including the debate over stem cell research and President Bush's faith based initiative.
